Nohj Ellis (John Franklin Sells) was born November 27th, 1991 in Richmond, VA. He, along with his parents, moved to Columbia, SC in 2001, where he made his way through several public schools. It was in middle school that he was introduced to hip-hop through XXL Mag covers, radio, and ringtones. From the Isley Brothers and Four Tops playing through his parent's speakers at family cookouts, to Lil' Wayne and The Game lyrics rapped over table top beats in the cafeteria, his influences were eclectic, to say the least.

Having attended Charleston Southern University in 2010, he encountered the Impact Movement, a parachurch organization aimed at African Americans on college campuses. It was through the Impact Movement that he would become a Christian, and eventually meet his now wife, in 2013. Graduating in 2014, he married Orianna Joy in 2016, and since then, they have been creating music and moods together.

An outspoken Christian, Nohj Ellis had always championed his faith loudly and fearlessly, until a mentor of his who had been a Christian for over 30 years deconverted from Christianity around 2021. Difficult questions about the nature of salvation, the veracity of the scriptures, and the overlap between oppression and religion eroded the belief of Nohj Ellis. Around 2023, he silently began deconverting from Christianity, attempting to salvage the vestigates of his faith with prayer and fasting, but to no avail. Deep study and irreconcilable contradictions did away with anything that was left, and in 2025, he publicly announced his atheism.

Since then, Nohj Ellis has made it his mission to help others discover their "why", in an effort to get people to earnestly think about the way that they think, and about what they truly believe, so that they can live their fullest lives. With nearly 15 years of rich experiences and study in Christianity, he speaks to the heart of the concerns that may plague those in any step of their journey. Whether you are thinking of becoming religious, are currently religious, or are having doubts about if you should stay religious, Nohj Ellis has been where you are, and can give you to the tools necessary to discover your "why".
